Painter, printmaker, and illustrator Peter Uchnár (Sobrance, 1970) is known for his vivid details and imaginative scenes, which appear both in his illustrations and his paintings. He began his studies at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Košice (1984–1988), where he specialized in restoration. Later, he continued at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, in the Department of Printmaking and Illustration under Professor Dušan Kállay (1992–1998), where he also worked as an assistant until 2002. He currently lives and works in Pezinok. He began his career as an illustrator immediately after completing his studies with the book Gulliver’s Travels (1998), which earned him the Golden Apple award at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (1999) and the award for the Most Beautiful Book of Slovakia (1998). His next monumental success, The Great Book of Slovak Fairy Tales (Ľubomír Feldek, 2003), followed only four years later and brought him not only another Most Beautiful Book of Slovakia award (2003) but also a place on the IBBY Honour List 2006 (Macao, China).
Peter Uchnár has since then illustrated more than fifty books and thirty individual book covers, ranging from fairy tales, legends, and poetry to literary classics. In addition to the already mentioned Gulliver’s Travels and The Great Book of Slovak Fairy Tales, he gained recognition in Slovakia and abroad with his illustrations for „Peter Pan“ (2008), „Motlitbičky“ (2007), „Koza rohatá a iné rozprávky“ (2018), „Kristínka a svet fantázie“ (2022) and the covers of book editions by William Shakespeare and Paulo Coelho.
For his illustrations, he has received numerous prestigious awards both at home and abroad: four times the Slovak Ministry of Culture Award in the category Most Beautiful Book of Slovakia (1999, 2003, 2009, 2011), the Golden Pen for the covers of the Japanese magazine Hana no tomo at the International Biennial of Illustrations in Belgrade (1998), the Ľudovít Fulla Award (2005), inclusion in the IBBY Honour List (2006), two Children’s Jury Awards at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (2009, 2017), the Albatros Publishing House Annual Award (2011), two nominations for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in Bologna (2010, 2016), and the BIB 2025 Plaque.
His works have been exhibited in Copenhagen, Jakarta, Warsaw, Taipei, Bologna, Tokyo, and many other cities both in Slovakia and abroad, where they had the opportunity to charm many readers and fans of illustration and painting.

In collaboration with his wife, the renowned Japanese illustrator Nana Furiya, they have created dozens of individual paintings and illustrations. Their collaboration was awarded the Golden Pen at the International Biennial of Illustrations in Belgrade in 1998 (for the covers of the Japanese magazine Hana no tomo).
Maliar, grafik a ilustrátor Peter Uchnár (Sobrance, 1970) je známy svojimi živými detailmi a fantazijnými výjavmi, ktoré sa objavujú ako v jeho ilustrácii, tak aj v maľbe. Svoje štúdium začal na Strednej umeleckopriemyselnej škole v Košiciach (1984 – 1988), kde študoval reštaurátorstvo. Neskôr v štúdiu pokračoval na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave, v ateliéri Grafiky a ilustrácie pod vedením profesora Dušana Kállaya (1992 – 1998), kde do roku 2002 pracoval ako asistent. V súčasnosti žije a tvorí v Pezinku.
Svoju ilustrátorskú cestu začal hneď po ukončení štúdia knihou „Gulliverove cesty“ (1998), ktorá mu priniesla cenu Zlaté Jablko na Bienále Ilustrácii Bratislava (1999) a cenu Najkrajšia kniha Slovenska (1998). Jeho ďalší úspech, „Veľká kniha slovenských rozprávok“ (Ľubomír Feldek, 2003) nasledovala len štyri roky na to a priniesla mu nielen ďalšiu cenu Najkrajšia kniha Slovenska (2003), ale aj zápis do Čestného zoznamu IBBY 2006 (Macao, Čína).
Ilustroval viac ako päťdesiat kníh a tridsať samostatných knižných obálok, od rozprávok, povestí a poézie až po literárne klasiky. Okrem už spomínaných kníh „Gulliverove cesty“ a „Veľká kniha Slovenských rozprávok“ ho na Slovensku aj v zahraničí preslávili aj ilustrácie kníh „Peter Pan“ (2008), „Modlitbičky“ (2007), „Koza rohatá a iné rozprávky“ (2018), „Kristínka a svet fantázie“ (2022) a obálok knižných vydaní Williama Shakespeara a Paula Coelha. Za svoje ilustrácie získal množstvo prestížnych ocenení doma i v zahraničí: štyrikrát cenu Ministerstva kultúry Slovenskej republiky v kategórii Najkrajšia kniha Slovenska (1999, 2003, 2009, 2011), Cenu Ľudovíta Fullu (2005), bol zapísaný do Čestného zoznamu IBBY (2006), získal dve ocenenia detskej poroty na BIB (2009, 2017), výročnú cenu vydavateľstva Albatros (2011), dve nominácie na cenu H. Ch. Andersena v Bologni (2010, 2016) a Plaketu BIB 2025
Svoje diela vystavoval v Kodani, Jakarte, Varšave, Taipei, Bologni, Tokiu, Tirane a mnohých ďalších mestách doma i v zahraničí, kde mali šancu jeho diela spoznať mnohí čitatelia a nadšenci ilustrácie a maľby.
V autorskej spolupráci so svojou manželkou, významnou japonskou ilustrátorkou Nana Furiya, vytvorili desiatky samostatných obrazov a ilustrácií. Ich spolupráca bola ocenená Zlatým perom na Medzinárodnom bienále ilustrácií v Belehrade 1998 (Za obálky japonského časopisu Hana no tomo )
